Daniel Berger, a key member of the triumphant U.S. Ryder Cup team in 2021, faced a major career setback due to a bulging disc in his back. The injury, which caused him severe pain, sidelined him for nearly 19 months. Determined to avoid surgery, Berger sought help from spinal specialist Stuart McGill, whose guidance has also benefited fellow golfer Luke Donald.

Berger’s lengthy absence had significant consequences. His multi-year PGA Tour exemption, secured through a 2021 victory, continued to run down, leaving him ineligible for a medical extension. This forced him to adapt, playing unfamiliar courses and events while golf underwent major changes, including the emergence of LIV Golf and updates to PGA Tour formats.

Despite the challenges, Berger remains confident in his abilities. “Even at a fraction of my potential, I know I can compete at a high level,” said Berger, who once ranked 19th in the world and earned a Ryder Cup selection.

The 31-year-old attributes his recovery to an improved approach to health and preparation, admitting, “This is probably what I should have been doing all along.” He now works with personal trainer Ben Shearer, who previously helped Luke Donald, and renowned swing coach Mark Blackburn, the PGA’s 2020 Coach of the Year.

Berger’s return has not been without hurdles, including adjustments to new coaches and caddies. However, his focus remains on rebuilding and giving himself the time to perform at his best.

Known for his fearless playstyle, Berger is optimistic that his next win isn’t far away. If his health and form align, his talent and determination could soon lead him back to the top of the leaderboard.
