Golden Boy Promotions president Eric Gomez confirmed that William Zepeda will not be able to challenge Shakur Stevenson for the WBC lightweight title on February 22nd due to a right-hand injury. Zepeda (32-0, 27 KOs), who recently defeated Tevin Farmer (33-7-1, 8 KOs) in Riyadh, has been seen wearing a right-hand brace following the fight, indicating the seriousness of the injury. According to Gomez, Zepeda is eager to fight Stevenson and the matchup will be rescheduled once Zepeda recovers.
Zepeda’s right hand appeared compromised during the fight with Farmer, as he increasingly focused on landing body shots in the latter rounds, which may have been an attempt to compensate for the injured hand. Gomez emphasized that this injury is legitimate, and Zepeda is not avoiding the fight, especially against a fighter like Stevenson, who is known for his defensive style.
